Microgreen Trays Work Hard

On a microgreens farm, trays are handled constantly.

They are filled with soil, stacked during germination, moved between shelves, watered repeatedly, harvested, washed, and stacked again.

This cycle repeats week after week.

Over time that constant use puts a lot of stress on the plastic.

Where Trays Usually Break

From our experience, the most common stress point is at the ends of the tray where you pick them up.

When trays are full of moist soil they become quite heavy. Each time a tray is lifted, the ends flex slightly under that weight.

After hundreds or thousands of lifting cycles, that repeated flexing can eventually cause the plastic to crack.

Once cracks begin to appear, the tray usually needs to be replaced, adding to that pile of shame in the corner of the garage.  You know the one.

A Small Durability Test (By Accident)

While preparing this article I was reminded of something that happened a few months ago. I dropped a full stack of trays onto our wooden deck just after washing them. Normally when that happens you expect the bottom tray to crack, because it takes the full weight of the stack.

When I picked the stack up, the bottom tray only had a small dent in it. It went straight back into the system and kept being used.

I actually came across that same tray again recently while washing trays, which is what prompted the video above. Even after months of normal use, the tray is still working perfectly fine.

Durability is difficult to capture in a spreadsheet, but it matters in day-to-day production. Trays are stacked, carried, washed, and occasionally dropped. When trays survive those moments instead of cracking, you avoid the replacements that show up as those jumps in the long-term cost comparison graph.

Why Some Trays Fail Earlier

Many trays are designed for occasional gardening rather than daily production use.

When those trays are used in a commercial microgreens setup, they will begin to show problems sooner than expected.

Common issues include:

  • Cracking edges
  • Warping after repeated use
  • Trays flexing when carried
  • Edges becoming brittle over time

None of these problems appear instantly.

But once a tray begins to fail, it often needs to be replaced.

What Manufacturers See Over Time

We asked Bootstrap Farmer about the typical lifespan of their trays.

According to Bootstrap Farmer, they have been selling their extra strength trays for about nine years and have not seen trays fail due to normal longevity.

According to Bootstrap Farmer, they offer a two year warranty from their site and no one ever takes them up on it.

Over very long periods the colour of the plastic may fade slightly, but the structural integrity of the tray generally remains strong.

In some cases they've seen farms close down 8 years after buying trays and are still able to sell their used trays second hand, still in good condition after many years of production use.

Why Durability Matters

When trays fail, the cost is not only the price of replacing them.

There are also practical problems:

  • Interruptions to your workflow
  • Time spent sorting damaged trays
  • Plastic waste that needs to be cleaned and recycled
  • Inconsistent trays within your system

Over time, trays that last longer help keep the system more stable.

Thinking in Years, Not Weeks

When choosing trays, it helps to think about how long they will last rather than just the purchase price.

A well designed tray that lasts many years will end up costing less over time than a tray that needs replacing every few seasons.

Durability also reduces waste and keeps your growing system consistent.
