Tray Quality, Explained

"Heavy-duty" gets used loosely across the microgreens market. Here's what the difference between generic vacuum moulded trays and Bootstrap Farmer trays actually comes down to, and why it affects how long your trays last and how much time you spend on watering, cleaning, and harvest day.

What's the actual difference between generic vacuum moulded trays and Bootstrap Farmer trays?

It comes down to manufacturing method and wall thickness. Generic trays are vacuum-formed from a thin sheet, typically 0.5mm to 1.0mm thick, which flexes noticeably and thins unevenly at the corners where the sheet stretched most during forming. Bootstrap Farmer trays are injection-moulded at a uniform 1.8mm to 2.0mm thick, giving a rigid structure that holds its shape fully loaded, stacked, or carried one-handed.

How can I tell the manufacturing method apart just by looking at a tray?

Weight is a fast, honest indicator: injection-moulded polypropylene trays are noticeably heavier for their size than vacuum-formed trays, because there's simply more material in the wall. Generic vacuum-formed trays often show visible thin spots or uneven thickness across the base, especially at the corners, while injection-moulded trays hold a consistent thickness edge to edge since the plastic is pressed into a fixed mould cavity rather than stretched over one.

Why does wall thickness matter beyond feeling sturdier?

Thin, deep-walled trays restrict airflow at the soil surface, which creates the humid micro-climate that leads to mould and damping-off. They also force an awkward cutting angle at harvest, which slows harvesters down and leaves sellable yield behind on the root mat. Shallow, thick-walled trays let you cut close to the base in one pass and keep air moving around the canopy.

How long do Bootstrap Farmer trays actually last compared to generic ones?

Generic vacuum moulded trays are generally a single-season item. They crack, or warp in the heat of the sun after cleaning or with repeated washing. Genuine heavy-duty polypropylene trays are built for 10+ years of regular use and handle pressure washing and food-safe sanitisers well, backed by a 2-year manufacturer warranty against cracking or degradation.

Do Bootstrap Farmer trays actually save time day to day?

Yes, in four ways. First, at watering: Bootstrap Farmer trays use a precision-nested tray with drainage holes and a matching solid base, which separate easily for quick, even bottom watering. Second, when soiling trays, a well-designed tray has no extra rims or ledges to catch soil, so there's no extra time spent wiping it clean. Third, they nest directly onto the tray below, so you don't need to tamp down each one individually. Fourth, you should be able to carry a tray comfortably and safely with one hand; needing two hands for every tray adds extra time and labour cost.

Can I mix and match different tray sizes on the same rack?

With a proper modular system, yes. Smaller shallow trays (for example, 1010 or 5x5 formats) drop directly into a standard 1020 master base, so you can run small-batch specialty crops or live-growing trays for chefs without disrupting your rack spacing. Not all tray systems are dimensionally compatible this way, so it's worth checking before mixing brands.

Have these trays actually been tested in New Zealand growing conditions?

The trays we stock are proven daily in our own solar-powered vertical farm here in Ashburton, not just imported and resold untested. We're also a verified New Zealand partner and authorised stockist, listed on the manufacturer's official international retailers list.
