🌱 How to Grow Radish Microgreens Step-by-Step Guide
Radish is one of the easiest and most reliable microgreens to grow. They germinate quickly, grow fast, and bring a fresh, peppery crunch to your meals. If you’re just getting started with microgreens, radish is one of the best varieties to begin with.
Why Grow Radish Microgreens?
- ⚡ Fast – ready in as little as 7–10 days.
- 🌶 Flavourful – fresh, peppery crunch.
- 🌈 Colourful – vibrant stems and leaves.
- 💪 Nutritious – rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
Growing Methods: Soil vs Hydroponic
Radish microgreens can be grown in soil, coco coir, or hydroponic systems. There’s no single “right” way — it comes down to your setup and preference.
- Soil (our preferred method): More forgiving, consistent moisture, and often faster germination.
- Hydroponic: Cleaner setup with no soil, but requires more control over moisture and airflow.
We’ve found radish typically germinates about a day faster in soil compared to hydroponic setups.
Equipment Options
You can keep things simple or scale up depending on your goals:
- Basic trays or containers (even repurposed ones can work)
- Growing medium (soil or mat)
- Light source (window or grow light)
For a more durable, long-term setup, we use and recommend Bootstrap Farmer trays, designed to last season after season and reduce waste.
Choosing Good Seed
- Use untreated seed suitable for microgreens
- Look for high germination rates
- Store seed in a cool, dry place
Good seed quality makes a noticeable difference in growth speed, density, and overall success.
Step 1: Sowing
- Add about 1 cup of fine seed raising mix to your tray 5x5 (12x12cm).
- Smooth the surface and remove large bark pieces.
- Evenly scatter 1–2 teaspoons of radish seed.
- Lightly water until moist (not soggy).
- Optional: Light spray of 0.3% hydrogen peroxide to reduce mould risk.
Step 2: Germination
- Stack trays (seed tray inside a solid tray).
- Add a top tray with a small weight.
- Place in a warm, dark space for 2–3 days.
- Seedlings will push up the tray when ready.
Step 3: Blackout
Remove the weight but keep trays stacked in darkness for another 1–2 days. This helps the stems stretch upward before exposure to light.
Step 4: Light & Growing On
- Move to a bright location (sunlight or grow lights).
- Switch to bottom watering.
- Keep leaves dry to minimise mould.
- Expect rapid daily growth.
Step 5: Harvest Time ✂️
Radish microgreens are ready 3–4 days after moving into the light, typically reaching harvest in 7–10 days from sowing.
- Harvest at 7–10cm tall
- Cut just above the soil line
- Harvest earlier for milder flavour, later for more spice
Storage Tips
- Store in a sealed container in the fridge
- Add a damp paper towel in the lid
- If excess moisture builds, place a dry towel in the base
